Secondary education is offered by state and private schools, mainly in German. Some private international schools teach in English, most often the International Baccalaureate, which universities in Europe and the US recognise.
Private schools usually do not set entrance exams. Instead they ask for school reports for the last two years, teacher references and proof of language level — for example IELTS for English programmes or Goethe, ÖSD, TestDaF or the school's own test for German.
